Factors Affecting Severity of Storm Damage in Your Glastonbury Home

Several factors determine the extent of weather damage to your Glastonbury home, including the permeability and porosity of the affected material. The more porous and permeable to moisture the material is, the more the stormwater can damage it.

SERVPRO's priority during the restoration of storm damage to your Glastonbury home is to remove the water as quickly as possible. Once the standing water is pumped out, the techs go on to remove the water permeated into different surfaces using dehumidifiers and air movers. The success and time required for restoration depend on the amount of water retained and the characteristics of the material.

How does the Nature of Material Affect Water Damage Restoration?

Water affects various surfaces differently. While porous surfaces allow water to enter and exit quickly, non-porous surfaces do not absorb moisture. Besides porosity and permeability, other factors affecting the extent of damage include-

  • Presence of vapor barriers: Vapor barriers are materials that are practically impervious to water. Such barriers' presence significantly decreases water's permeation into the surfaces. Gloss or semi-gloss paint and vinyl wallpaper are practical vapor barriers that can protect structures from storm damage.
  • Hygroscopicity: It is the characteristic of a material to absorb and hold onto moisture from the air. Although hygroscopic materials like drywall absorb much moisture, they also tend to dry quickly. Material like hardwood might take longer to absorb the water, but it also takes a significantly longer time to dry.
  • Temperature: The temperature of the material and the air determines whether the moisture will enter or leave the material. Heating the surface and the drying air speeds up the drying.
