Cell Phones: Cleaner is Good for your Health

4/27/2021 (Permalink)

Cellphone in hand The cleaner your cellphone is, the healthier you'll be. SERVPRO knows all about clean, so follow our tips to keep your phone germ-free.

Pandemic or no pandemic, it’s always a good idea to wash your hands frequently. In fact, one of the positives to emerge from the disruption of the past years is a greater emphasis on cleanliness for overall better health. Well, do we at SERVPRO® have a public health message for you: your cellphone is a germ incubator.

In fact, a recent University of Arizona study showed that cellphones harbor ten times more bacteria than a toilet seat! (We’re sorry, but it had to be said.)

Think about it: you use your phone throughout the day, rarely thinking about how frequently you touch it, or what you touch before or after. How often do you use your phone, then pick up food? Or how often do you shop or pump gas or … you get the picture, and it’s not a clean one.

Avoid Cross-Contamination

A basic way to keep germs off your phone is to be more aware of what you touch before and after you use your phone. After you touch another object, if possible, wash your hands with soap and water. If that’s not possible, use hand sanitizer.

  • When eating: put your phone down while eating and wash your hands afterwards
  • Shopping and running errands: Keep wipes or hand sanitizer in your car and use them before picking up your phone
  • In the bathroom: does this have to be spelled out? N.O.

Disinfect Your Cellphone

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you should regularly clean all high-touch surfaces in your home and at work. Obviously, your phone is a high-touch item.

SERVPRO is all about the clean. Therefore, we advise that you give your phone a wipe with a soft, dry cloth every time you return home. We also recommend that you disinfect your phone two to three times a week.

  • Use disinfecting wipes and soft dry cloths. Stay away from bleach, bathroom cleaners or other abrasive cleansers
  • Remove the phone’s case. Wipe the phone and its case with the dry cloth
  • Clean the phone and the case with wipes. Don’t oversaturate the surface, but make sure you wipe the ports and buttons
  • Allow the phone to air-dry for five minutes, then wipe it dry with a new dry cloth

Your Home or Business Could Use Disinfecting, Too

As the CDC says, all the high-touch surfaces in your home or business should be regularly cleaned: faucets, light switches, railings, and more. Last year, in response to the pandemic, SERVPRO created a new cleaning program called Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned. This proactive deep cleaning service uses hospital-grade cleansers, proven procedures and SERVPRO’s highly-trained staff to exceed CDC standards, assuring you that you have done all you can to protect the health of your family or employees and customers.
