SERVPRO: Your Weapon Against MRSA

12/19/2019 (Permalink)

MRSA bacteria seen through a microscope Stay healthy! MRSA is one of the biohazards that SERVPRO cleans and sanitizes at homes and businesses.

SERVPRO® is known for its quick and thorough disaster remediation of fire, water, storm, mold and other damage at homes and businesses throughout the U.S. But you may not know that SERVPRO can protect people from dangerous and sometimes fatal MRSA infections! Because our professionals are trained to safely handle the worst biohazards, they know how to sanitize facilities to remove all traces of MRSA and other germs.

What Is MRSA?

MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus, or staph, is a common strain of bacteria, which can cause infections in the bloodstream, lungs, bones or soft tissues. Staph is typically curable with antibiotics, but some staph strains have become resistant to our most effective antibiotics—including methicillin—and are now much more difficult to eradicate. Usually, these MRSA infections take root in already-ill persons who are in hospitals and long-term care facilities.

Another type of MRSA is often called a “superbug,” because it causes drug-resistant infections in previously healthy people. This type of infection is referred to as CA-MRSA, or community-acquired MRSA, and it usually manifests as a skin infection. You may have heard of CA-MRSA outbreaks affecting healthy adults and children in schools, gyms, locker rooms, prisons and other public buildings.

To prevent a MRSA infection, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advises:

  • Keep wounds covered
  • Practice good basic hygiene
  • Do not share personal items, such as towels or razors
  • Launder soiled clothing
  • Clean surfaces that people may contact
